Three: neutral liquid detergent, measured small; an alkaline or enzyme formula keeps working on a protein fibre after the rinse, which shows up as stiffness. Four: cold water on the most delicate cycle, so heat and agitation do not act together. Five: the lowest spin setting, or none if the machine allows it, since a fast spin trades washing damage for stretching damage. Six: lay it flat on a towel in the shade and reshape it by hand while damp. Machine-wash the pillowcase when three conditions hold at the same time: the fabric is structurally intact, with no pulled threads, thinning patches or split seams; the soiling covers the panel rather than a single spot; and you can give it a dedicated load with cold water, a delicate cycle, the lowest spin setting and no dryer. All three, not two. When they hold, the machine route is not a compromise, because a long gentle cycle reaches the whole panel evenly while your hands only reach what they rub. Stop and hand-wash when any one of the three fails: a snag anywhere on the weave, a shared load whose spin you cannot lower, or an item that has already been through a hot dryer once. Each failure removes a condition the machine route depends on.

Compress it into a rule you can carry to the machine: if the pillowcase is sound, the soiling is broad, and you can hold temperature, agitation and spin at their floor together, the machine is the better tool; if any one of those slips, the sink is.
